CHAPTER 29
Reynaldo slammed the car door and ran toward his house. It had taken him twenty minutes to coax his aunt back into the Executive Mansion. Since hearing about Jamie on the news, she kept insisting that Reynaldo stay with her.
“You’ll be safe here, Reyito,” she had said. “Governor Phillip’s men will protect you.”
“I’ll be fine, tía,” Reynaldo had said, escorting her up the long driveway. He had felt bad rushing her, but he needed to get home. “I’m not afraid. Please, go, take care of little Charlotte and baby Phil. They need you.”
“Are you sure, I just—”
“Tía,” Reynaldo wrapped his aunt in a hug, “I need to go. I will be careful, and I will bring a jacket, I promise.” He forced a smile.
“I’m afraid you will need more than a jacket, Reyito.” She kissed the top of his head and whispered a sweet “te amo” as Reynaldo handed his aunt to one of the federal agents hovering outside the front door who guided her inside the mansion.
Reynaldo raced up his front steps. When he opened the front door, a startled Pedro was sitting on his living room couch watching television.
“Rey, what are you doing home?” he asked in a voice that told Reynaldo that Pedro didn’t expect to see him. Reynaldo could only imagine what his brother was up to in order to warrant such a guilty face, but right now he didn’t have time.
“Can’t talk, Pedro, I need to get some things.”
“From where?” Pedro jumped up from the couch and blocked the staircase.
“What the … Pedro, I don’t have time for games.”
“WHAT DID YOU SAY, REY?” Pedro shouted. He waved his hands wildly as if guiding a plane to a hangar.
“Pedro, what is wrong with you?”
“NOTHING, WHY?” he shouted again.
“Then let me pass.” Reynaldo tried to take a step up the staircase, but Pedro stepped with him as if they were dancing.
“WHAT’S THE RUSH?” Pedro yelled. “TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DAY.”
“My what?” Reynaldo said. “Since when do you care about my day?”
“WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, REY? I ALWAYS ASK YOU ABOUT—”
“Are you wearing Ricky’s pants again, hermano?” Reynaldo shook his head and pulled at the waistband of Pedro’s pants.
“Am I … ?” When Pedro looked at his crotch, Reynaldo snuck under his arm, taking the rest of the stairs in threes.
“You always fall for the same trick, hermano.” Reynaldo hurried across the landing toward his bedroom.
“Wait, Rey!” Pedro clambered after him. “You don’t want to go up there.”
“Why is my door closed?” Reynaldo asked and flung the bedroom door open, startling his father and a woman, who were lying naked on top of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comforter. They immediately started covering themselves up.
“Papa!” Reynaldo said and covered his eyes with his arm.
“I told you that you no want to go in there, Rey,” said Pedro, who was out of breath by the time he reached the bedroom. He put his arm on Reynaldo’s shoulder.
“Does no one knock around here?” Reynaldo’s father asked. He was holding the comforter over his and the woman’s bare chest.
